Writing Prompt is a journaling time where the students are given a specific story starter or topic to write about. After introducing the prompt, the students briefly brainstorm what they might write, offering relevant words that I write on the board. Once they begin writing, they are encouraged to focus on writing their ideas and not get bogged down with spelling and other mechanics, which they can fix later as they choose.
The purpose of this activity is to encourage and engage students in writing. So, if they come with an idea of their own or a work in progress, they may write on that idea or topic.
At the end of class, as time allows, students who wish to, may share their writing.
The students have been given the following prompts:
A fairy grants you one wish.
When it’s hot outside I like to ____________.
I am going on a field trip with Ms. Frizzle in the magic school bus.
It was a great tree house.
“My Journey on a Pirate Ship”
I discovered I have a super power.
Knock! Knock! Knock! I opened the door. There stood ___________.
I dressed as _________________ for Halloween. I became that!
